You’ve crafted all there is to craft, looted all the legendary items, and defeated all the bosses. Now, what do you do in Conan Exiles? Thanks to its loyal and widespread fanbase, you have many mods to try out and explore.
From offering more building structures to completely overhauling the game, there’s a mod for everyone. Take a look at how modding works in Conan Exiles, and find something new to make the game even more fun.
What is Conan Exiles? – A Thrilling, Brutal, Survival Game for Builders and Conquerors
Whether you’re a fan of Conan the Barbarian or not, Conan Exiles is an excellent survival game with tons of content. It has something for everyone, from building bases to fighting challenging bosses in dungeons. It’s set within the world of Conan the Barbarian and uses the lore to flesh out its enemies, quests, and conflicts.
It’s technically an MMO, but you can also play on single-player, co-op, or rent your own private server to play with friends. There are also two categories of servers on official servers–PVP and PVE. If you like the idea of fighting other players, then try out a PVP server. PVE is likely more your angle for those who prefer cooperative play.
In Conan Exiles, your story is basically your own. Do you just want to farm and sell resources to other players? Or maybe you want to be a warmonger and build your army to defeat the Purge. It’s an open-world game that offers some guidance but doesn’t hold your hand. You’ll quickly understand that no one will hold your hand in that world.
While official servers don’t use mods, you can find private servers that use them. You’re also able to use mods on single-player and co-op save files.
Modding in Conan Exiles – An Annoying but Rewarding Process
Adding mods to games is rarely easy. While a few games out there make the process as easy as possible, Conan Exiles only gets halfway there. The good news is that the developers are supportive of mods. They’re not actively trying to make it challenging to use mods for their game.
The bad news is that it can take a while to start playing the game with mods, and when you want to play with another person, you can run into problems.
Let’s start with the basics. There are two primary sources for mods. The easiest way to add mods to Conan Exiles is through Steam. It has a Workshop where modders can easily upload their mods.
As a Steam user, you only need to “Subscribe” to a mod you want to use. Steam will install it on Conan for you. From there, you just need to go to the Mods section on the game’s main menu and move the mod from the “Available” side to the “Active” side.
The other primary source is Nexus Mods. Adding mods to Conan via Nexus requires a few more steps. Many mods listed there are also on Steam’s Workshop, so it’s better to use Steam to download the mod.
To use mods from Nexus, you must make a mods folder within your Conan Exiles file system if it doesn’t exist already. Then, download the mod from Nexus and move the PAK file into the mod folder. Keep in mind that some mods may require additional steps.
Like with Steam, you’ll need to move the mods from the “Available” menu to the “Active” menu in the game, then reboot it.
And this is where things get a little frustrating. You’ll have to reboot the game whenever you move a mod around. That also includes moving a mod up or down in the order of your mod list. If a mod isn’t working, then you have to figure out which one it is. That means constantly rebooting the game as you troubleshoot the problem.
The hardest part is when you’re using mods for the first time. After that, you only need to mess with them when one becomes broken or conflicts with another player’s mod collection during a co-op game.

Sound interesting? Then take a deeper look at what these top mods have to offer. Remember that these are a fraction of what exists out there. There are tons more mods to explore and enjoy.
Best for NPCs: Hosav’s Pets Extended – Add More Cuddlies to Your Collection
As a fan of Ark: Survival Evolved (and now Ark: Survival Ascended), I love anything to do with taming creatures. Yet, the choices in the vanilla version of Conan Exiles need more variety. There are some fun creatures, but there just isn’t enough.
Hosav’s Pets Extended is an excellent NPC mod for Conan Exiles because it includes over 40 new pets. Each one has its own models, animations, and textures. From giant bats to dragon hatchlings, there’s a little of something for everyone in this menagerie.

Best Mods for Weapons: Endgame Extended Weapon Arsenal – Overhaul Questing and Explore Dungeons for New Weapons.
Like most games, once you reach the endgame, things become stale. It all just becomes a grind. Endgame Extended offers new challenges to complete after you’ve beaten the main elements of Conan Exiles.
You’ll have new dungeons to explore with tons of new weapons to find or earn. You’ll also run into new NPCs who can provide you with quests. Endgame Extended is extensive, with its own menu to view quests and your traits. Speaking of traits, the mod has new paths that your character can follow to grow even more powerful.
Those who love magic will also enjoy exploring its extensive magic system.
If the game is starting to feel boring, try out the Extended Endgame mod.
Best Mods for Armor: Shimas Compendium – Become a Druid and Look the Part
Armor tends to favor the warriors, but what about the magic users? That’s where Shimas Compendium shines. It introduces a new magic system called Druidcraft. You’re able to craft druidic armor and weapons. It also comes with new dyes that you can use for warpaint.
Along with druidic armor, you’ll have new bosses to fight and new dungeons to explore. It has something for the builders out there, too. New structures and materials allow you to work with unique aesthetics and decorations.
You can build the druid grove of your dreams with this mod.
Best Mods for Building: Northern Timber – Build Cozy and Rustic Cabins
I’m a sucker for rustic builds, so this last mod is for my fellow cabin lovers out there. Northern Timber is a mod that has over 93 building pieces, all fashioned to look like Nordic cabins. They’re all Tier 1 structures, too, so you can build them immediately.
The creator made the mod to make better buildings that matched the aesthetic of the cold, northern regions of the map. You’re able to craft roofs with mossy roofs or snow-covered ones. Besides looking like it fits better in a snowy climate, it actually offers some cold protection, too.
It has mild cold insulation, so you’ll find it a bit easier to survive in freezing temperatures up there.
Grab this mod if you’re like me and love building cozy cabins.
Best Mods for Roleplaying: The Age of Calamitous – Enter a World of Political Intrigue
Are you tired of the same Stygian enemies? Then, you need to explore The Age of Calamitous. It’s a world set within the Exiled Lands. It comes with its own story, lore, and a gripping, tension-filled, political drama that puts Game of Thrones to shame.
The mod completely overhauls the game. It introduces new factions, lore, enemies, and even a brand-new quest system. You’ll also be able to develop your magical talents and upgrade new abilities with its feat trees.
The mysterious gate to an abandoned city
There’s something for people like me out there, too. Calamitous offers new buildings and placeables that can add a bit of medieval fantasy flair to your base. I love working with its gates and city walls myself.
If you’re tired of Conan Exiles, this mod can add some spice to the game again.
Best for Decorating: IMMERSE RP: Buildings & Placeables Decor – Immerse Yourself with These Decorations
This mod was literally made just for me. It has a staggering 400+ placeables that allow you to customize your base to your heart’s content. Big placeables like maize fields will make your base look like some farm. Then there are small ones like plates and food items that make your base feel alive.
After decorating your home, it’s time to start decorating the surrounding area. IMMERSE RP has its own farm vendor that sells several different types of animals, like goats, chickens, and even some wild varieties. They all eat the same food, too, so you don’t have to worry too much about raising them.
Although Chapter 2 dropped a tavern, IMMERSE RP had it first. You can still craft its version of a tavern along with a spinning wheel, fishing boat, and other crafting stations. With thralls to work them, you can prepare your base with specific aesthetics like a farming community or dockyard.
There are few limits on your creativity with this mod.
Mods Giving You Problems? Try These Solutions
As anyone who uses mods knows, there will likely be problems. When it comes to Conan Exiles mods, there are a few common errors you might experience. Let’s take a look at them and provide some solutions on how to resolve those errors.
Error: Mod Not Showing Up on the Mod Menu in Conan Exiles
Solution: There’s a good chance that the mod isn’t in the correct file. If you’re using Steam, and thus the Workshop, then it’s rare to see this error. Steam puts the mod in the correct folder for you. It’s worth double-checking your Conan Exiles files to see where Steam is trying to put the mod files.
Unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod to try to clear the error.
Those using Nexus Mods may need to do a bit more digging. Look into your Mods folder to see if the mod is there. If it is, then double-check that it’s the correct file format. Most mods are a .pak file, but some modders also use other file format types.
It’s also worth checking the installation guide on the modder’s site. Some modders will provide a specific route for installing their mods. Follow the route exactly to ensure the mod ends up where it needs to be for the game to read it.
Error: Mod Mismatch when Playing with Other Players
Solution: A common problem I face when playing Conan Exiles with my partner is mod mismatches. This occurs when one of the players has a mod that the other player doesn’t. To play together, everyone needs to have the same mods downloaded.
It’s also vital that everyone has the same version of the mod. You may need to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod on Steam’s Workshop to prompt an update.
In some cases, even if you have all the same mods and identical versions of the mod as the other player, you may still receive a Mod Mismatch error. The good news is that the game will still let you play. Just choose the “Connect” option when the game tells you there’s a Mod Mismatch. You should still be able to join the game.
Error: Game Crashes when You Use a Mod
Solution: Sometimes, you just need to stop using a particular mod. Game crashes are common when you use mods. Something in the file corrupts another portion of the game, which causes the game to crash. It’s important to remember that mods are invasive files. They’re not part of the game naturally.
Amateur and professional coders also make them. Not every mod is going to have great code. If a mod keeps causing your game to crash, you should unsubscribe and remove it. It may take a while to find the offensive mod, too.
If you have a lot of mods, then you’re going to need to take the time to go through each one, test it, and determine which one is causing the problem. It’s usually good practice to install each mod individually. That lets you check with errors without wondering which mod it’s coming from.
Outdated mods can also crash the game. When a modder stops updating their mod, but the game continues to receive updates, new code can interfere with the mod’s code. Unless the modder updates the mod, it may be best to remove the mod.
New to Using Conan Exiles Mods? Try These Best Practices to Avoid Pulling Out Your Hair
Because of how frustrating it can be to use mods in any game, it’s worth remembering a few tips to make the process easier. You should spend time unlocking new, modded weapons or fighting new enemies, not the mod itself.
As someone who plays with mods in Conan Exiles, these are the tips I follow to make the game enjoyable while using mods.
1. Use Steam’s Workshop and Not Nexus Mods when Possible
If you want to use mods, I recommend getting them from Steam, not Nexus Mods. The process of installing and uninstalling the mod is just so much easier. Since Steam connects to Conan, it can plop the mod right in the folder for you. You don’t have to worry about making new folders or finding the correct folder to put a file in.
The Workshop also makes it easy to track what mods you have installed. You can navigate to the “My Subscriptions” section to see all the mods you’ve subscribed to in the past. The Workshop also contains other helpful information like mod reviews, the last time it received an update, and any additional notes from the modder.
While some of these features are on Nexus Mods, you have to jump through a few more hoops to install mods from there. Save time and effort by using the mods on Steam’s Workshop.
2. Download and Test Each Mod Individually
It’s easy to find a bunch of mods that sound interesting to you and subscribe to them all immediately. If you subscribe to 10 mods and then discover that your game keeps crashing, it’s challenging to know which of the 10 mods is causing the problem. You will have to unsubscribe from them and then resubscribe individually to determine which isn’t working.
It’s much better just to do that from the start. Subscribe to one mod, activate it, and test it in your game to see if it causes problems. If it doesn’t, then move on to the next mod.
Before you subscribe to just any mod, too, it’s worth taking a look at the reviews and any comments users have made. You might discover that the modder has abandoned the project. Even a mod that received high reviews and ratings may eventually stop receiving support. Read the reviews to see what people are saying about the mod.
It could save you time.
3. Subscribe to Mods with Another Player at the Same Time
Because mod mismatches are a common problem in Conan Exiles, you can take one extra step to limit this problem occurring to you. If you know that you’re going to play a modded savefile with someone else, then jump on a call and subscribe to mods together simultaneously.
Someone should lead the mod search by looking through the options and pointing them out to the other person. If you agree to use the mod, you should subscribe to it immediately. This process ensures that each person subscribes to the same mod.
When it comes time to play together, you shouldn’t have any problems with mismatched mods.
If you’re unable to get on a call together, have at least one person provide a list of the mods they’re using. The other person can take that list, go down the line, and subscribe to them, too.
